Q: Who are our coaches? A: Varsity Coach: Reed Reynolds JV Coach: Casey Adams
Q: When are tryouts? A: January 30-31,2012.
Q: Who needs to tryout? A: Everyone. Even if you played in a previous year, you are still expected to try out. One of the most critical factors of success is dedication so some preference will be given to returning players and to those who have attended the summer clinics.
Q: What equipment will be needed for tryouts? A: Athletic clothing and a lacrosse stick are required for tryouts. It is recommended that you wear cleats as there will be timed running drills.
Q: What equipment will I need to supply for games? A: REQUIRED GEAR: Shoulder Pads, elbow pads, gloves, a stick, a helmet (purchased from the team), an athletic cup, mouth guard (black) and cleats. It is highly recommended that you purchase underarmor underclothing or some other appropriate underclothing as players will be asked to don and doff game jerseys and shorts on the field.
Q: Which type of stick should I buy? A: There are 3 basic types of sticks - Attack, Defender, and Goalie. As a beginner, unless you are sure you want to play goalie or defense, purchase an attack stick. Even defenders and goalies play with their attack sticks at times so it's a good all around stick to purchase.
Q: Where can I buy equipment? A: Play it again and Sports Authority have a limited supply but there are numerous on-line sites, see the related links site on our main page.
Q: What are the costs? A: Required costs include the purchase of individual equipment, an individual equipment fee, and a fair share contribution which includes your portion of field fees, coaches fees, team equipment, and booster membership. You must also become a member of US Lacrosse - http://www.uslacrosse.org/. Make sure you tell them you are part of group #2393409 - Buchholz High School. Checks are payable to BBLBC and can be given to the front office to leave in the Boys Lacrosse mailbox for pickup. Please inform the Treasurer when you deliver a check so it can be retrieved.
Q: What academic requirements are there? A: FHSAA requires a 2.0 GPA however, the team strives for all players to maintain a 2.5 or higher.
Q: How do I learn the rules of the game? A: We follow FHSAA rules for our organization and NFHS Boys Lacrosse Rules for rule of play. Their official rules can be found on their website http://www.fhsaa.org/ and www.NFHS.org. We also have a beginner’s guide to assist you.
Q: How many players are on each team? A: There will be up to 25 players selected for Varsity level play. Everyone else interested (at this time) may be considered for the JV team unless they are Seniors. Seniors cannot play on JV teams per FHSAA rules.
Q: How can I obtain the skills? A: Practice, practice, practice. There are camps and clinics (see related webpage). Endurance and stick skills are critical to success. Staying fit and practicing with the stick will help. It can be as simple as throwing the ball and catching a ball against a solid brick wall (preferable one with no windows anywhere in the vicinity) such as a racket ball court or practicing shooting into a tipped over trash can in the front yard.
Q: What position can I play? A: Everyone is considered for all positions but the following is a general guideline about the characteristics of each position: - Attack – Players who are generally very fast. Accurate in passing/shooting with excellent stick skills. Players who like to score. - Middie (Midfielder) – Quick and fit with fantastic stamina. The heart and driving force of the team. - Defender – Aggressive and tough. Size is valued over speed and must be willing to hit people – hard. - Goalie – Fearless, high tolerance for pain, and a little bit crazy. Strong voice and great reflexes.
Q: What division/district will we play in? A: District 5
Q: How many games of the season? A: You should expect to play around 12-15 games starting in February and running through the end of March. Check the link to the games schedule for more information. The JV team should expect to play 4-6 games during the same time frame.
